There’s a reason I bleat on about how the minimum stay in any destination should be 3 nights. My last 2 @thehouseofmg have proved the point.
Even without my voracious curiosity, it could take 2 days just to explore the hotel.
There isn’t a corner, artefact, picture, menu, that hasn’t been carefully chosen and placed in order to showcase the cultural aspects of this vibrant & all too often overlooked region of India. Each one tells a story, captivating, fascinating & at times humbling. Many are sourced from the region, are by local artists, some recycled family heirlooms, even the gardener has created artwork aside from the day job.
This hotel is a celebration of all that Gujarat is, and it provides a perfect introduction to the state.
Of course one can’t talk about House of MG without mentioning Agashiye, their famous, roof top speciality restaurant serving authentic seasonal thalis, or The Greenhouse Cafe where I tried pan icecream, chaat, and tried to work my way through their array of cardamom, mint, ginger, rose, saffron, lime infused drinks.
They even managed to get me into their shop, that 4 letter word that is usually anathema to me! There I discovered that every item is hand sourced from artisans around the country. I particularly loved the wooden childrens toys, so much nicer than plastic tat. It’s not even obscenely priced, even I bought 2 items. Now that has to go down in history!
BUT, what really got to me and genuinely brought a tear to my eye was the Ahmedabad Trunk Textile Gallery. Textiles are something I’ve avoided in India, favouring adventure & wildlife, but this gallery rendered me speechless. The sheer skill, diversity, extraordinary detailing, of the different textiles from the tribal communities from around Gujarat is nothing short of astonishing. Finally, I get it! I’m not going to go down that rabbit hole, I’m already 54, I don’t have time, but wow.
There’s no space here for the Shreyas Foundation, walking tours, rickshaw rides, Queen Elizabeth, Gandhi or eco policies. Watch this space for more!
