It’s very difficult these days, with so many hotels to know which one to choose, particularly in very popular destinations. When it comes to wildlife, so many hoteliers cash in on the tiger, whereas others focus more on conservation. I always try to seek out these properties, one’s with a soul, who care about the wildlife, eco systems and people and work to improve them all.
I was therefore incredibly excited when I heard that there was now a homestay in Ranthambhore, but not just any old homestay but one at the former home of Fateh Singh Rathore no less! Fateh, fondly known as the Tiger Man of India, is a tiger conservation legend and it was this very place in Sawai Madhopur, overlooking what is now Ranthambhore National Park, where the legacy of protecting India’s magnificent big cats began.
Fateh’s son Goverdhan, his daughter-in-law Usha, and grandson Yudhveer keep Fateh’s legacy (and stories) alive. Rooms have now been added in the garden of Fateh’s home (now their home) so that they can welcome guests here and share captivating stories of their family’s dedication not just to saving tigers but in their prolific efforts with education and healthcare too. They are already known for their other property, one of Ranthambhore’s best, luxury eco resorts Khem Villas, but now can often be seen in the gardens and lounge area here and are happy to chat to you about the man, the park and the wildlife.
The property is more simple in style than Khem Vilas and is run on a B&B basis but, just next door, they have also opened Fateh’s Café which is licenced, serves excellent food ( I know, I ate there twice) and has a great play list! Although it is becoming increasingly popular, guests staying at Fatehs Retreat are guaranteed a table and then its just a short stroll home.
It’s wonderful to sit on your verandah overlooking the gardens, pool and forested hills of the reserve in the distance, listening to the sounds of the jungle and be so thankful that, although Ranthambhore National Park is now an incredibly busy destination, a product of its own success, Indian’s biggest cat now thrives here.
Every stay at Fateh’s Retreat offers an experience beyond the average safari, it offers a glimpse into the world of tiger protection, offering an experience that goes beyond the typical wildlife tour.
